Representing women from Balti institution

Eighteen women living in a mental health institution in the Moldovan town of Balti were repeatedly raped by their psychiatrist over the course of more than a decade. We worked with Doina Straisteanu, a human rights lawyer, to support them through the trial process. In November the perpetrator was found guilty and sentenced to 13 years’ imprisonment.

This is a huge victory for justice, and serves as an example around the region. There are more women whose testimony was ignored by the court and we are helping those women to appeal. We need to work with the government to deal with the root cause: institutionalisation.

We need to get the women of Balti out of the institution and into safe and inclusive communities. People like you have supported us with financial gifts large and small this year. Now, at Christmas time, there’s no better time to give.

Help us transform lives and laws next year, by giving today.
